Found the note on table when I got home from work
Next to unpaid bills and pictures overturned
Be lying if I said I wasn't hurt
That you weren't there but that's what I deserve
You gave your reasons for leaving but they didn't quite fit
Always knew how to talk around things you couldn't admit
Wish I could hear your voice so I wouldn't have to guess
Which transgressions we should have confessed
Words on paper don't mean a thing
Not in the way you wrote them it's the way you sing
Easing young hearts or arrows you're slinging
Could be anything or nothing depends how you read them
By the time you dictate out your lines the moment for us will be gone
Speak your mind so we can find a way to move along
It's a contract for work, an airline ticket
The book you read or the letters you didn't
Note on the fridge, an apartment listing
Cigarette box saying change how you're living
The sonnet you wrote on your wedding day
Or divorce papers come to take it away
A line on the check says it'll all be fine
Or the signature telling you the loan is declined
Things you might have read a thousand times seem different coming out of your mouth
Hope that once was held as certain has now been put in doubt
Words on paper don't mean a thing
Not in the way you wrote them it's the way you sing
Easing young hearts or arrows you're slinging
Could be anything or nothing depends how you read them
By the time you dictate out your lines the moment for us will be gone
Speak your mind so we can find a way to move along
A handwritten poem or a typed out phrase
Didn't ever matter that much on the page
It'll carry the ink or go up in flames
But the way you think, it was all the same
Symbols of advantageous claim
Or records of how long you carried the shame
Won't even call me out by name
But the quiver in your writing shows who's to blame
Think I'll take the hit and call it fair game
