Yellow Line

I left my heart on Main Street last night

Tipped my hat to the taxi’s brake lights

Thought about an old friend of mine

As I made my way to the commuter line

He‘d tell me heaven can wait for another day

If we don’t settle this tab there’ll be hell to pay

Hop aboard and get my ticket stamped twice

Because I can’t afford the fare to paradise

There you go sitting and watching me leave again

Here I go pretending that I’m never coming back

Maybe this time I’m just going to buy a one way ride instead

But you know all too well that I can’t

Stuck behind the yellow line looking for a departure time

Staring down what remains of the track

The seats are packed with lost identities

Faces drawn like Rockwell memories

Riding out to find a life they can rebuild

Come back home with pockets half filled

I’ve been around this town for too long

Used to be a borderline but now it’s gone

Wish I could leave these crumbled smokestacks where they lay

Turn shattered bricks to golden road on my way

There you go sitting and watching me leave again

Here I go pretending that I’m never coming back

Maybe this time I’m just going to buy a one way ride instead

But you know all too well that I can’t

Stuck behind the yellow line looking for a departure time

Staring down what remains of the track
